During our recent four-day sailing adventure aboard the Scarlet Lady, we had the delightful opportunity to experience brunch at The Wake, the standout restaurant of Virgin Voyages. This restaurant, which is also the cruise line's steakhouse, seamlessly combines the grandeur of a classic steakhouse with a fresh, modern twist. And here's the cherry on top: like all other dining spots on Virgin Voyages, the brunch at The Wake is complimentary, meaning you only cover the cost of your drinks. This offers a luxurious dining experience without the hefty price tag, setting the stage for a brunch that promises both indulgence and value.
A Sea Day Exclusive
Brunch at The Wake is a special event exclusively offered on sea days, giving passengers a unique opportunity to indulge in a rich array of dishes while enjoying the serene sea views. During our voyage, we had one sea day, which presented us with the perfect occasion to sample the brunch menu at this renowned restaurant. Opting for a late morning reservation at 11:30 am allowed us the time to fully appreciate and anticipate the culinary delights that awaited us, especially considering our delightful dinner at the same venue the night before.
Bottomless Cocktails to Start Your Day
Our brunch commenced with the bottomless cocktails available for $25 per person. This delightful offering allows you to enjoy a range of beverages including mimosas, Bloody Marys, rosé, and sparkling wine, with the freedom to switch between them as you please. Whether you prefer starting with a Bloody Mary and then moving on to a mimosa, the choice is yours, setting a joyful and relaxed tone for the brunch.
A Starter to Remember
For starters, we opted for clam chowder, poached shrimp, and a wedge salad. The clam chowder was served in a unique manner, with chunks of clam and potatoes laid on the plate, followed by a server pouring the creamy soup over them, resulting in a rich and delicious dish. The shrimp were succulent, perfectly complemented by a delightful cocktail sauce, while the wedge salad, served in two halves, was ideal for sharing, offering a refreshing start to our meal.
Entrees that Delight
As we moved on to the entrees, we found ourselves with an abundance of choices. The options ranged from steak and eggs (we chose to go without the eggs) to brioche French toast, The Wake Benedict, and softshell crab Benedict. Each dish was a culinary delight, with the steak arriving perfectly cooked, accompanied by a delightful Béarnaise sauce and spinach. The French toast was a sweet indulgence, promising a decadent start to our day. The Benedicts, on the other hand, offered a unique twist on the classic dish, featuring perfectly cooked eggs paired with rich sauces, and crispy, delicious crab and pork belly.
A Sweet Ending
Despite being full, we couldn't resist the trio of desserts, a decision we didn't regret. The crepe cake was the star, offering a light yet creamy delight that melted in our mouths. The apple tatin impressed with its soft caramelized apple and crunchy financier, while the panna cotta, with its beautiful presentation, provided a light and fruity end to our meal.
Our brunch at The Wake on Virgin Voyages was a memorable experience, offering a perfect blend of classic and modern dishes, all in a luxurious setting. The complimentary dining experience, exclusive to sea days, is a must-try for anyone sailing on the Scarlet Lady. Whether you're a fan of brunch or looking to try something new, brunch at The Wake promises a delightful experience that combines great food with great company, making for a perfect sea day morning.
