As a big fan of Italian cuisine, my anticipation was through the roof as I prepared to dine at Extra Virgin on Virgin Voyages. Located on the renowned Scarlet Lady, Extra Virgin welcomes everyone with a modern yet warm atmosphere, much like a trendy SoHo bistro. The place beautifully combines current styles with warm colors, fabrics, and décor, creating a space that is both modern and cozy. At Extra Virgin, like all other restaurants on board, you can enjoy a delightful array of dishes at no extra charge.
Handmade Pasta and a Wide Array of Flavors
Rooted deeply in Italian traditions, Extra Virgin presents dishes inspired by different regions of Italy. The highlight here is undoubtedly the handmade pasta that's freshly made in-house, offering diners an exceptional culinary experience.
Starting off, the wine and cocktail list is very extensive, providing a wide variety of options to suit all tastes. The appetizers, or "antipasto," include several indulgent choices such as fried calamari and braised mini meatballs, setting a joyful beginning to our meal. Although we didn’t try the crispy artichokes, they looked quite promising, showcasing a unique approach to Italian cuisine.
We were particularly impressed by the Affettati Misti, a delightful platter brimming with rich cheeses, cured meats, accompanied by honey, nuts, and caponata, making it an absolute must-try for two people wanting to explore Italian flavors in depth.
Pasta: The Main Attraction of Extra Virgin’s Menu
As we browsed the Extra Virgin menu, it became apparent that the pasta dishes were the standout items. We chose the gnocchi paired with mushrooms, spinach, and a luxurious truffle butter sauce, and the pappardelle al ragu, which came with a substantial beef bolognese. Both dishes impressed immensely, embodying textures and flavors that could easily rival any Italian grandmother's secret recipe.
A Delightful Finish with Affogato
Despite feeling full, we couldn't resist exploring the dessert menu. The affogato cart was the highlight, delivering a fun and enjoyable experience of custom-made gelato sundaes topped with fresh espresso, a sweet end to our delightful meal.
