About Geiranger
Located within the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, Geiranger is surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in Norway. The fjord is known for its steep cliffs, lush vegetation, and famous waterfalls like the Seven Sisters, which cascade from towering heights into the fjord below. Although the village itself has a population of fewer than 300 residents, it becomes a bustling hub during the summer as cruise ships and tourists arrive to explore the area. The charm of Geiranger lies not only in its scenery but also in the accessibility of its attractions. The village serves as a gateway to scenic viewpoints, hiking trails, and fjord excursions, all of which offer visitors an opportunity to connect with the stunning natural environment that makes this region so special.
How to Get to the Dalsnibba Viewpoint
One of the most popular activities in Geiranger is visiting the Dalsnibba Viewpoint, known as the Geiranger Skywalk. This glass-floored platform, perched 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) above sea level, offers sweeping panoramic views of the Geirangerfjord, the surrounding mountains, and the village below. On a clear day, you can even spot glaciers in the distance.
You can get to Dalsnibba by joining one of the many bus tours available from the cruise port or by driving yourself along the Nibbevegen toll road. The drive takes about 45 minutes each way and offers breathtaking scenery throughout, with plenty of scenic stops, such as Flydalsjuvet. Those seeking a more active adventure can also rent an electric car or e-bike to reach the viewpoint at their own pace.

Hiking in Geiranger
Geiranger offers several scenic hiking trails, making it a great destination for those looking to explore the natural beauty on foot. Two standout hikes are the Waterfall Walk and the more challenging trails leading to Vesterås Gard.
Waterfall Walk
The Waterfall Walk is an easy, scenic trail that allows you to follow the Storfossen Waterfall from the cruise port up through the village to the Norwegian Fjord Centre.
You can start the hike directly from the cruise terminal. It’s a short 5–10 minute walk through the town to reach the beginning of the trail.
The trail consists of stairs all the way up, with a few resting areas along the route. The walk to the top takes about 15 minutes.
The stairs run right alongside the waterfall, giving you an up-close experience of the rushing water as you ascend.
Once you reach the top, it’s just a quick 3-minute walk to the Norwegian Fjord Centre, where you can learn more about the area’s history and natural landscape.
Vesterås Gard
The hike to Vesterås Gard offers a more challenging adventure with rewarding views and the chance to enjoy local food at the top.
Begin with the Waterfall Walk, continuing past the fjord center. From there, you can choose to follow either paved roads and paths or take a more strenuous route through the woods.
We took the forest trail, which was a steep, uphill climb with a mix of dirt paths, stone stairs, and ramps. The hike took us about 1.5 hours, and we jokingly nicknamed this section the “Stairway to Heaven” because of the relentless incline.
At the top, you’ll find Vesterås Gard, a historic farm turned restaurant, where you can relax with a coffee and waffle while enjoying breathtaking views of the fjord and mountains. The rest stop is a welcome reward after the challenging ascent!
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can extend your hike to the Vesteråsfjellet viewpoint beyond the restaurant for even more spectacular vistas.
On the way back down, we opted to walk along the roads, which provided an easier descent straight back into the village.
