About Alta, Norway

Alta, often referred to as the "Northern Lights City," is located in Finnmark county, the northernmost part of Norway. The city boasts a fascinating history dating back thousands of years, as evidenced by the prehistoric rock carvings found in the area. Alta's modern claim to fame is its status as one of the best places in the world to view the Aurora Borealis, thanks to its location in the aurora zone and relatively stable weather conditions.

The city is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, including fjords, mountains, and vast wilderness areas. This geographic diversity makes Alta a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities ranging from dog sledding and snowmobiling in winter to hiking and fishing in summer.

Culturally, Alta serves as a gateway to Sami culture, the indigenous people of Northern Scandinavia. Visitors can learn about Sami traditions, reindeer herding, and their unique way of life adapted to the Arctic environment.

Where is the Alta Cruise Port Located?

Alta's cruise port situation is unique. While very small cruise ships can dock directly in Alta, most cruise ships are too large for the existing facilities. As a result, the majority of cruise vessels anchor in the Alta fjord, and passengers are transported to shore using tender boats. This distinctive arrival process adds to the adventure of visiting this Arctic destination.

The tender boats bring passengers to a landing point located near Alta Airport. Upon arrival, visitors will find a small visitor center that serves as a welcoming point for cruise guests. This center is likely to provide maps, information about local attractions, and possibly assistance with transportation and tour bookings.

For those booked on shore excursions, buses typically await near the tender landing area to transport guests to their respective tour destinations. This convenient arrangement allows for a smooth transition from ship to shore activities.

If you are using GPS while in port, the tender location is at Alta Hurtigbåtterminal - make sure to add this to your favorite locations!

Alta's public transportation system is operated by Snelandia, which runs a fleet of easily recognizable yellow buses throughout the city and surrounding areas. To access the bus system from the cruise tender landing point:

1. Walk about 5 minutes to the main road.

2. Look for a bus stop in front of the gas station.

3. At each bus stop, you'll find posted timetables providing schedule information.

Key bus routes for cruise visitors include routes 40, 41, 42, 43, 100, and 110, which all go to Alta Sentrum (City Center). Route 40 is the primary route to the Alta Museum, though other lines may also serve the museum on cruise ship days.

How to Get to the Alta City Center from the Cruise Port:

The Alta City Center, known locally as Alta Sentrum, is approximately 10 minutes from the tender landing location. To reach the city center using public transportation, take any of the buses on routes 40, 41, 42, 43, 100, or 110 from the bus stop near the tender landing point. These buses all head to Alta Sentrum. The bus journey is much quicker than walking, which would take around an hour.

How to Get to the Alta Museum from the Cruise Port:

The Alta Museum is about a 15-minute bus ride from the cruise port. Take bus 40 from the stop near the tender landing point. On days when cruise ships are in port, most other bus lines also stop at the museum. There's a bus stop directly outside the museum for easy access. While it's usually possible to reach the museum with a single bus ride from the port area, occasionally you might need to change buses at Alta sentrum, but this is generally unlikely on cruise ship days. You can always ask the bus driver for clarification of your route.
