Chacchoben Mayan Ruins - Costa Maya Shore Excursion Review

Chacchoben Mayan Ruins - Costa Maya, Mexico

Chacchoben, “the place of red corn” in the Mayan language, is located about 50 minutes from the port of Costa Maya. The ruins and structures found here date from around 700 A.D., and the site is quickly becoming one of the most popular amongst Costa Mayan excursions.

Upon arriving at the port we were instructed by the shore excursion staff to head to the waiting area. The shore excursions in Costa Maya are broken out into different lines based on the excursion you are going on. From there you are escorted to the buses and given a bus number sticker - this is your assigned bus going to and back from the ruins.

As we traveled from the port in our charter bus, our guide gave us information of the surrounding cities and the history of Chacchoben. They had some maps which were passed around the bus showing how the land has changed over the years, along with some historical timeline charts. The charter bus was air-conditioned with soft seats, footrests, plugs, and a restroom. For the 50-minute journey to Chaccoben, it was a very comfortable and informative ride.

Chacchoben Mayan Ruins Path & Site Map

Upon arrival at Chaccoben, we were given time to use use the restrooms or grab a quick snack at the market. They announced that there was a mandatory $5 fee to take video recordings of the sites - we had no issues taking photos. Our tour was led into the jungle, with most of the walking over even-packed dirt and grass paths. This path passes three excavated and restored pyramids, as well as walls and staircases. The surrounding area has abundant wildlife such as armadillo, deer, gray fox, peccary, and spider monkeys. Going to Chaccoben was an incredible experience, and even though it was hot and humid, there was relief from the abundant shade and a breeze.

Overall, we would highly recommend this excursion to anyone visiting Costa Maya, and can see how it is becoming one of the most popular shore excursions in Costa Maya. The tour lasted 4 hours, and when we went, it cost $94 per person with the shore excursion discount perk from Norwegian Cruise Line.
